Ocular albinism is a genetic disorder that specifically impacts eye pigmentation, distinct from systemic albinism which affects the entire body. It results in pale irises, reduced pigment in the retina, and vision issues like decreased visual acuity, sensitivity to light (photophobia), and involuntary eye movements (nystagmus).
Genetic mutations disrupt melanin production in the eyes, crucial for optic nerve and retinal pigment epithelium development. Consequently, abnormal eye structure and impaired vision occur. Treatment focuses on symptom management, including corrective lenses for refractive errors, tinted lenses for light sensitivity, and sometimes low-vision aids. Regular eye exams are essential to monitor vision and address potential complications associated with the condition.
