Follicular Conjunctivitis

Follicular Conjunctivitis

Follicular conjunctivitis is an inflammatory condition affecting the conjunctiva, the delicate membrane covering the eye's white part and inner eyelids. It is characterized by the development of small, dome-shaped follicles composed of lymphoid tissue. These follicles typically appear on the lower eyelid and in the fornices, the areas where the eyelid meets the eyeball. Viral infections, particularly adenovirus, are the primary cause of follicular conjunctivitis, presenting symptoms such as redness, irritation, watery eyes, and a gritty feeling. Allergic reactions to environmental triggers like pollen can also induce this condition. Treatment focuses on addressing the underlying cause. For viral infections, supportive care like lubricating eye drops and cold compresses can provide relief. Allergic conjunctivitis may require antihistamines or steroid eye drops. Seeking evaluation and guidance from an ophthalmologist ensures appropriate diagnosis and management tailored to the specific cause of follicular conjunctivitis.
